The opening of the Spurs 2026 training camp dawned Tuesday with coach Mitch Johnson and star player Victor Wembanyama firmly in charge of the defending Western Conference champions, the team’s longest-tenured active player indicated.
“He’s amazing,” eighth-year forward Keldon Johnson said of Mitch Johnson, who is in his second season as coach after serving as acting coach in 2024-25 following the stroke that eventually ended Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich’s coaching career.
Keldon Johnson said Mitch Johnson’s communications skills are a big reason why the 39-year-old Seattle native is such a good leader.
“He speaks to us a lot, communicates how he feels and his points of emphasis and things we need to do, and he doesn’t back down on those things,” the 2026 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award winner said. “That’s what it takes to have a successful team. You need a strong head of the snake. He’s been there for us.”
As far as Wembanyama’s leadership goes, it begins with his desire to strengthen team chemistry, said Keldon Johnson, 26.
“He’s taking the initiative to make sure we stay tight and we continue to do things together, that we continue to communicate to each other in the moment and things like that,” Keldon Johnson said. “His leadership, not only this past offseason, but during (last) season was amazing and we look forward to that (again) this year.”
