Offensive tackle is often considered the second-most important offensive position.
The Washington Commanders have certainly prioritized offensive tackle. They went out and traded for Laremy Tunsil in the 2025 offseason, then used their first-round draft pick at No. 29 to select Josh Conerly Jr.
ESPN surveyed NFL executives, coaches and scouts to help them rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions. Today we observe the survey results at offensive tackle. Did the Commanders have an offensive tackle to make the ESPN 10? They sure did, with Tunsil coming in at No. 5.
Here are ESPN’s top 10 offensive tackles and how they relate to the Commanders.
- 1. Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions: Sewell and the Lions obliterated the Commanders defense for 546 yards of offense, scoring on every single one of their eight possessions, until they sat on the ball on their ninth and final possession, running out the clock.
- 2. Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers: Williams should have played his entire career for Washington. But Williams determined he wanted out, claiming medical negligence by the organization. When they replied they would take the records to the NFL if need be, Williams ceased such talk, still didn’t want to play here, and was traded by Ron Rivera for third- and fifth-round picks. Williams will certainly be in the Hall of Fame.
3. Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Wirfs was chosen No. 13 in the 2020 draft, after Washington’s Ron Rivera had chosen Chase Young second overall.
4. Jordan Mailata, Philadelphia Eagles: Mailata and Lane Johnson combine for a tough challenge for the Commanders twice each season in their NFC East home-and-home series.
5. Laremy Tunsil, Washington Commanders: Tunsil was the best Commander in 2025 and was therefore rewarded with a contract extension by GM Adam Peters.
6. Darnell Wright, Chicago Bears: Wright was rarely challenged by the Commanders’ defense in their 2025 MNF game. He recorded a massive 85.6 run-blocking grade in 2025, ranking 6th out of 89 qualified offensive tackles in the NFL.
7. Lane Johnson, Philadelphia Eagles: Johnson has controlled and humbled many a Washington defensive player in their matchups.
8. Andrew Thomas, New York Giants: In his sixth season (2025), Thomas performed well, climbing the ladder from No. 10 last year to two spots higher. The Commanders will see him twice each season he wears the NYG blue.
9. Joe Alt, Los Angeles Chargers: Alt missed the October 5, 2025 game against the Washington Commanders. He was ruled out with a high right ankle sprain sustained in the previous week’s game against the New York Giants.
10. Garett Bolles, Denver Broncos: Bolles put together a tremendous game at left tackle against the Commanders in Week 13 of the 2025 season, playing all 69 offensive snaps with zero penalties, zero blown blocks in pass protection, and allowing just a single pressure.
