Commanders' Dan Quinn reveals text message he received after signing Stefon Diggs

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn opened his Friday press conference by talking about how ‘fired up’ he is to coach wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Washington officially announced Diggs’ signing on Friday morning before the Commanders hit the practice field.

“First things first, we’re definitely fired up to welcome Stefon Diggs to the team,” Quinn said. “And he’s a tremendous player. We know that, but what I’ve heard more and more this week is about what kind of leader he’s been to the younger players and teams that he’s been a part of and the energy he brings, not just to the field, but also to the sidelines.”

Quinn then fielded multiple questions about his new receiver, from what he brings to the offense to whether Washington was worried about anything off the field with Diggs.

Coaching Diggs presents a rare opportunity for Quinn. With Diggs now a Commander, it means that Quinn has coached Diggs and his younger brother, Trevon. Quinn was the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys from 2021-23. Trevon Diggs was in his second NFL season when Quinn came to Dallas. Under Quinn’s tutelage, Diggs led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and was named first-team All-Pro.

Since Quinn left Dallas after the 2024 season, Diggs and Micah Parsons often discussed how they admired and respected Quinn. Quinn revealed that on Thursday, he received a text message from Trevon Diggs regarding his brother signing with Washington.

“It’s pretty rare you get to coach two brothers, you know? So, I got a cool text from little brother [CB Trevon Diggs] last night about the impact he’s had and the amazing leader that his older brother has been and, you know, pushed him into things. So yeah, I think you don’t get to do that very often.”

It’s worth noting that Trevon is a free agent, too. The Cowboys cut him last season, and the Packers claimed him off waivers. Green Bay released him this offseason. He’s still only 27.

Washington has resisted signing Trevon Diggs, ultimately choosing Ahkello Witherspoon, Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau over him. However, injuries happen. He now has someone on the roster to put a good word in for him.
