Colts training camp battles: How does DT rotation shake out?

Training camp for the Indianapolis Colts kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what’s to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.

What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, how training camp and the preseason unfold will ultimately determine who wins these roles.

Next up is the defensive tackle position.

There are two things to be on the lookout for at defensive tackle. The first is how the playing time rotation behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart shakes out. At this position, typically four or even five players see regular snaps.

The other battle will take place on the back end of the dept chart. There may not be room for both Jerry Tillery and Derrick Nnadi.

When it comes to the rotation, it’s probably safe to assume that Colby Wooden will have a good-sized role. That then leaves Adetomiwa Adebawore, Tillery, Nnadi, and others competing for one to two rotational roles.

As far as roster spots go, I would expect Adebawore to be on the 53-man, although I did not have him as a roster lock. If the Colts do keep five defensive tackles, some combination of Adebawore, Tillery, and Nnadi will be competing for two spots.

As I’ve alluded to, I think this decision likely comes down to either Nnadi or Tillery. If I were making a 53-man roster prediction now, I’d choose Tillery over Nnadi because of his pass-rush abilities, with Nnadi being more of a run-stuffer. Wooden can help out in the run game behind Stewart, and as far as roster construction goes, I’d rather have that pass rush presence.

Now, if the Colts go heavy and keep six defensive tackles on the roster, that means going light at another position group.
