ASK IRA: Can there be a Nikola Jovic reclamation project by Heat?

Q: Is it that Nikola Jovic feels confident playing for the national team but loses all confidence once back in the NBA?  – David.

A: Was thinking the same thing about Nikola Jovic after yet another solid effort alongside Nikola Jokic with the Serbian national team, with his 22 points, five assists and two blocks in the World Cup qualifier victory Thursday over Switzerland. The reality is that against the hard cap, the Heat would most benefit in the moment by moving off of Jovic’s salary. But there also is a truly unique skillset, one that Erik Spoelstra and his staff should be charged with unlocking. Yes, Jovic has to meet them halfway with his effort and commitment and acceptance of what is required on the NBA level. The compromise could be another trial run at the start of this coming season, and if that works, then a transaction component could wind up upgraded in time for February’s trade deadline.

Q:  Ira, with Anfernee Simons signing with the Sixers, all that’s left are old players that have seen their better days.  It looks like this year will be a gap year. Do we hope we get a lottery pick next year? – Joel, Plantation.

A: They are the Heat, so they never hope for a lottery pick. Plus, you do not have Giannis Antetokounmpo ($58.5 million) and Bam Adebayo ($$49.5 million) on your payroll at their price points and settle for a gap year. Also, if the Heat dip into the lottery next June, then their 2028 first-round pick would go to the Hornets unprotected as a result of the disastrous Terry Rozier trade in January 2024.

Q: Hey Ira, someone needs to present LeBron James a full ride membership to Doral. Just saying.  – David, Venice.

A: That’s up to the man in the red hat.
