Colts Day 3 rookie needs more opportunities at key depth position

Indianapolis Colts‘ rookie defensive end Caden Curry needs more opportunities moving forward in training camp after his performance in the team’s preseason opener.

In that contest, Curry was disruptive in a variety of ways. He totaled six tackles as a run defender, including three solo, and two for a loss, according to ESPN. He also generated a sack and three quarterback hits, along with two pass deflections.

We also saw Curry lining up inside as well, providing defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo with additional versatility up front.

“Caden Curry made a ton of plays,” Shane Steichen said, via Colts.com. “I was really pleased with him.”

Based on reports from training camp, it sounds like the bulk of Curry’s reps going into that preseason game came with the third-team defense. However, with questions surrounding the Colts’ pass rush depth, more opportunities to make a greater impact should come his way.

Laiatu Latu and Arden Key will lead the way at defensive end, while Jaylahn Tuimoloau and Micheal Clemons are the next two up in the rotation. That said, it was a quiet outing for both Clemons and Tuimoloau, who combined for one pressure over 46 pass rush snaps.

As is the case for any rookie, consistency will be key for Curry, but that performance against the Patriots was too good to go unrewarded, especially with unknowns around the Colts’ rotational depth at defensive end.
