Waterloo football cancels Week 7 game because of low numbers

Waterloo has announced the cancellation of its Week 7 football game at McDonald.

According to a statement released by the school district, “Our football team has shown resiliency throughout the year. We assessed the overall physical health of the players following Friday’s game. Our numbers were low, but we hoped to continue to play the upcoming game. Additional players throughout the week came forth unable to play this week. We have decided it is best to cancel this upcoming Friday’s game against McDonald.”

Athletic director Keri Dennison said there are 13 active players on the roster. Waterloo has three games remaining after its Week 7 cancellation. The Vikings are set to host Jackson-Milton Week 8, then travel to Lowellville and Memorial. Playing those games would hinge on the return of injured players to put the roster at a safer number. According to the statement released by the school district, the status of those games is uncertain.

“Moving forward, these decisions will be made on a week-by-week basis, with the hope that the team will be able to play the remaining games on the schedule,” the statement read.

After winning their opening game, the Vikings have dropped five in a row, the last four by 30-plus points.
