College football rankings chaos features new No. 1 in US LBM Coaches Poll Top 25

If last week in college football was chaos, this week was carnage with five teams ranked in the top eight taking losses. Needless to say, the US LBM Coaches Poll looks considerably different after Week 7. Naturally, it starts at the top.

Miami (Fla.) is the new No. 1 team, although the Hurricanes were nearly bitten by the upset bug themselves. Miami heads the poll for the first time since December of 2002 after surviving a double-overtime nail biter against Florida State. The ‘Canes received 50 of 73 first-place votes cast this week.

Ohio State moves back up to No. 2 after outlasting previously unbeaten Indiana. The Buckeyes claimed 13 firsts and finish 27 points ahead of Brigham Young, which knocked off Notre Dame and prevented the Irish from reaching the top spot. The Cougars’ No. 3 spot is their highest ever since USA TODAY began administering the coaches poll in 1991. BYU was picked first by 10 voters following the Notre Dame win, and makes its first appearance in the top five since a No. 5 finish in the final poll of the 1996 season.

Georgia, whose stay at No. 1 lasted just a week, slips to No. 4 after its home loss to Auburn. Texas Tech climbs four places to crack the top five. Indiana falls just two spots to No. 6. Mississippi gains three spots to No. 7, as Notre Dame slides to No. 8. Utah and UCLA, who both managed to stay undefeated, round out the top 10.

Tennessee moves up to No. 11 after upending Alabama, which slips six places to No. 13 behind No. 12 Kentucky. Texas, at No. 1 just two weeks ago, drops 12 places to No. 18 following a second successive loss. Florida, which was responsible for said result against the Longhorns, rejoins the poll at No. 24 along with No. 23 Northwestern.
