A lot has been made of Tony Khan since he launched AEW but there is no doubting the company has been a success.
Put together as a direct rival to WWE, AEW has slowly built its own brand and has some of the biggest names in wrestling on its shows.
Contracts, a slightly easier schedule and creative control are all said to be positive aspects of working for Khan’s company.
However, that doesn’t mean Khan isn’t involved in the actual production of matches and shows.
In fact, according to Chris Jericho, if Khan wants something done, then it gets done.
Chris Jericho shares Tony Khan story before facing Samoa Joe in AEW
Those of us that have followed wrestling for years know that Vince McMahon was the king of having his fingerprints on everything.
To a lesser extent, Triple H is the same in WWE but he does allow his producers and performers creative freedom too.
As for AEW, Khan is a bit less hands on than Vince but according to Chris Jericho, Khan can also be demanding as well.
“I remember I was working with Samoa Joe once in AEW. Tony wanted something and neither one of us felt it. We basically said, ‘Maybe we should think about it or whatever.’ Tony, you could tell, he was very, not disappointed, but he very much wanted us to do this,” Jericho revealed to Branson Quirke.
“The moment he left the room, Joe and I looked at each other like, ‘Alright, how are we going to make it work?’ We had a conversation, we had to reshuffle the deck and move this there and get rid of this and add this, then went back and told Tony and he’s like, ‘That’s so great, thank you so much.’ He’s happy and we’re going to make it great.
“It’s completely different from what we originally wanted to do, but he’s the boss. He’s the one who tells us what he wants and if you don’t like it, you go make eight billion dollars and start your own wrestling company. That’s what a pro does, that’s what you do. It’s not always the way you want it, but I’m not the boss.”
With AEW continuing to grow and in recent months going head to head with WWE, the company seems to be creating a real place for itself among wrestling fans.
Whether it can continue to keep pace with WWE and survive, only time will tell.
