On Thursday, tennis legend and long-time ESPN analyst Chris Evert shared devastating news when she revealed another recurrence of her ovarian cancer. Evert had first uncovered her cancer in 2022 in the fallout of a preventive hysterectomy, for which she later underwent chemotherapy treatments. In December 2023, Evert shared that her cancer had recurred, but had been clear ever since treatment.
Now, with Wimbledon 2026 on the horizon, the 18-time Grand Slam champion is taking a step back from her broadcasting duties to understandably focus on her health and recovery. It stands to reason that she will likely also miss ESPN’s coverage of the US Open from late August through mid-September, given her diagnosis.
In her statement, Evert said that ovarian cancer is “relentless,” but she will remain “optimistic and determined” in her ongoing battle. This is the last sort of health news anyone in the tennis world wanted to hear about for one of the sport’s biggest giants:

ESPN PR released a statement about Evert’s news, noting the company’s “thoughts” are with the tennis icon as she takes time away for her health. Evert has been with ESPN’s tennis coverage team since 2011.
