Chelsea Team News vs Brentford: Joao Pedro, Reece James and Moises Caicedo Latest

Chelsea head to the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday with familiar problems, injury doubts, defensive instability and a manager keeping his cards close to his chest.

Xabi Alonso declined to confirm whether Joao Pedro will be available against Brentford, after the forward withdrew from Brazil duty through injury. The timing matters. Chelsea train on Friday morning, so there is still room for a late call.

Alonso said, “We will see tomorrow if he’s ready to play and we will make a decision.” That is clear enough. Joao Pedro has not been ruled out, but he has not been cleared either.

Joao Pedro fitness leaves Chelsea waiting

Joao Pedro is the headline concern, though he is far from the only one. Moises Caicedo is still being assessed after his frustrating start to the season. He has not featured since being forced off 13 minutes into his comeback appearance in the 4-3 win over Brighton last month.

Reece James is another doubt. Chelsea’s captain was not seen in the section of training open earlier this week, though that view was limited. Alonso also kept the status of Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha vague. The intention is obvious, keep Brentford guessing for as long as possible.

Chelsea defence remains the bigger issue

The larger problem is not one player, it is the shape of the side. Chelsea drew 2-2 with Hull last weekend and have already conceded 12 goals in six matches in all competitions. That is too many, full stop.

Alonso switched to a back four against Hull, but there is a strong case for returning to a 3-4-2-1. Brentford are quick out wide and Chelsea have looked exposed when asked to defend open spaces. A back three may be less adventurous, but right now stability matters more than aesthetics.

Predicted Chelsea XI vs Brentford

There is uncertainty in midfield too, especially with Caicedo unavailable or at least not yet trusted to start. Chelsea still do not look settled in the double pivot, and that lack of balance keeps feeding the defensive issues.

Predicted XI: Martinez, Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto, Gusto, Lavia, Hato, Palmer, Welbeck, Rogers.

Doubts: Joao Pedro, Caicedo, James, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
