Chargers' Mike McDaniel makes surprising change ahead of Week 9

Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is making a slight change ahead of Week 9’s contest against the Houston Texans.

McDaniel spoke to the media Thursday and said he will look for answers on offense by sitting in the coaches’ box.

“One of the things I want to try is call plays from the box to kind of see adjustments for myself and communicate with position coaches appropriately what things we can focus on between series,” McDaniel said.

“Seems like a good action to take based on how things have gone this year, and realistically something that I’ve only brought up because I’m very confident in the rest of the offensive coaching staff and how they’re able to set the tone and communicate information on the sidelines.”

McDaniel, who has spent most of his time as a coordinator calling plays from the sideline, will move to the coaches’ box against the Texans.

The 43-year-old last worked from the box in his lone season as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator in 2021. That season, he led the 49ers offense to 8th in total offense (averaging 376.0 yards per game) and 13th in scoring (25.1 points per game).

The Chargers opted not to make any major changes during their bye week, so they’re not doing anything else to shake things up.
