A Nebraska lineman was honored Thursday by being named to a watchlist for a prestigious award. Senior Justin Evans was named to the Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List.
Evans is one of 40 players named to the list, with the winner being chosen by the trophy committee using data from Pro Football Focus (PFF). The 6-2, 315-pound lineman is also one of 13 Big Ten linemen named to the list, the most of any conference. The Rimington Award is named after former Husker and College Football Hall of Famer Dave Rimington.
The legendary lineman was a two-time first-team All-American and two-time Outland Trophy winner. In his senior season, Rimington swept both the Outland and Lombardi Awards and finished fifth in voting for the Heisman Trophy.
Evans now returns for Nebraska, looking to continue his streak of consecutive games played. The East Orange, N.J., native has made 38 straight appearances, including 31 starts. He’s been a focal point in the Huskers’ pipeline, and is now a part of an experienced offensive line that formed this past offseason. Evans is one of two returning starters.
Last season, Evans started all 13 games at center. His play helped Emmett Johnson earn first-team All-America honors. Johnson averaged just under 121 yards per game on the ground last season. Nebraska averaged just under 146 rushing yards per game.
