There are several high-profile contributors to keep close tabs on this summer following an eventful 2025-26 season.
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of them, as the consensus is Milwaukee will move on from before or after the upcoming NBA Draft.
41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is another, as he’s yet to make his intentions clear for the 2026-27 campaign. The James sweepstakes have been a whirlwind thus far, to put it mildly. Some believe the four-time NBA champion could return to Los Angeles. In contrast, others believe the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers might soon close in on James.
With the Spurs being more of a wild card landing spot, Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus named the Lakers, Warriors, Cavaliers, and Heat as the top suitors for James. Surprisingly, Pincus believes Cleveland will be the franchise to begin next season with the four-time NBA Finals MVP on their roster.
“The best fit for James is also the most complicated one,” Pincus wrote Friday. “Just a kid from Akron goes home to end where he began. “James joined the Cavaliers in 2003 as the No. 1 overall pick, leading the team to the NBA Finals in 2007. After a stretch in Miami with the Heat, he rejoined the Cavs for a four-year battle against Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, finally winning a championship for the franchise in 2016.”
“The Cavaliers returned to the Eastern Conference Finals this postseason for the first time since James’ second departure, but the New York Knicks dispatched them quickly in a sweep. Cleveland is paying for a win-now team that’s just not good enough.”
“James gives the franchise the chance to push the envelope. The Cavaliers give him a roster that’s closer to a title than the Los Angeles Lakers, in the conference without the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. Not that the champion Knicks are a pushover, but the Cavs with James would make for a more competitive series.”
Would reuniting with the Cavaliers give James the best chance to end his career with another championship? Perhaps, considering that Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals this season, and could have applied serious pressure on the New York Knicks had they held on to a 22-point lead in Game 1.
The other factor at play is the Cavaliers’ commitment to pairing James with his son, Bronny, by any means necessary. It’s no secret that family is everything to James, meaning that landing the 22-time All-Star would require the Cavaliers to bring Bronny on board as well.
One thing’s certain for Cleveland this season: the 2016 NBA champions will be in a fierce battle for James if they pursue him aggressively.
