Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride made some comments on the Bussin the Boys podcast recently that might have upset some Cardinals fans. When he spoke to reporters at training camp on Saturday, he walked back the comments a bit and felt bad for what he said.
On the podcast, he made a comment that is true to some extent, as there are tons of people who have moved from somewhere else to live in the Phoenix area.
“No one’s from Arizona,” he said on the podcast. “Everyone has moved in from another state, so they’re all fans of their own team.
“There are no Arizona fans in Arizona, so it’s a tough deal, but hopefully we start winning some games and we can bring some of those fans back.”
Most would understand what he was trying to say. He wasn’t saying there are literally no Cardinals fans, just that there are a large number of non-Cardinals fans in the area, and that shows in game attendance.
However, he addressed the comments.
“I probably shouldn’t have said that,” he said. “Obviously, the fanbase is great. We have a tremendous fanbase, loyal fans to all the teams here. We’re lucky to these (fans).”
He also reiterated what he said in terms of winning fans over.
“We’re going to have a great season, we’re going to win games and we’re going to make sure those fans have something proud to cheer for. Like I said, I love it here in Arizona, and I hope they love me, too. It’s a special place, the fans are great and I’m excited for this year to give them something to be proud of.”
It was a good way to respond to what he said.
It doesn’t change the fact that State Farm Stadium is often overrun by opposing fans. the weather is great, which makes it a nice destination for fans of other areas and teams when the Cardinals play them. Lots of local fans have ties to other teams because of family or coming from somewhere else. But it is also because the Cardinals have been bad, and it is hard to want to watch a bad team lose. As expensive as NFL games are, if you can recoup some of what you paid or make money instead of watching the Cardinals be bad at football, it makes sense.
But good for McBride for responding to what he said. He was speaking off the cuff about something that is sometimes hard to deal with as a pro athlete when home games don’t feel like home games.
