Canadiens keeping tabs on Vincent Trocheck despite no-trade clause

The Montreal Canadiens continue to monitor veteran center Vincent Trocheck as the New York Rangers explore trade possibilities. However, any potential move faces an immediate obstacle because Montreal remains on Trocheck’s no-trade list.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli addressed the situation during Frankly Hockey, making it clear that nothing has changed regarding the veteran’s trade protection.

“Vincent Trocheck’s no trade list has not changed,” Seravalli said. “There was some talk… about the Canadiens, they might monitor the Trocheck situation, they’re on his no-trade and that hasn’t changed.”

The comments suggest Montreal’s interest is genuine, but the Canadiens cannot advance discussions unless Trocheck agrees to waive his modified no-trade clause.

Trocheck remains an attractive trade candidate after another productive campaign. The 32-year-old recorded 53 points and 193 hits in 67 games last season and has also helped Team USA capture Olympic gold during the 2026 Winter Games.

Canadiens fit the profile, but Trocheck controls the process

The Canadiens’ interest makes sense. Montreal reached the Eastern Conference Final behind a young core, but adding an experienced two-way center could strengthen the roster for another playoff run.

Trocheck checks several important boxes. He wins faceoffs, plays in every situation, and brings postseason experience to a developing lineup. His $5.625 million cap hit through the 2028-29 season also represents reasonable value for a player with his resume.

Still, the biggest decision belongs to Trocheck. Seravalli’s report confirms Montreal remains on his no-trade list, limiting the Rangers’ flexibility despite interest.

New York is reportedly seeking a significant return as general manager Chris Drury continues evaluating roster changes. With Trocheck under contract for three more seasons, the Rangers are not under pressure to accept a discounted offer.

For now, Montreal should remain patient. The Canadiens have improved through smart drafting and player development rather than short-term moves. Pursuing Trocheck is logical, but only if a reasonable situation develops.
