The Golden State Valkyries failed to protect their home turf in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, losing to the Atlanta Dream, 79-65, at Chase Center on Monday. The best-of-seven series is tied at 1-1.
The Valkyries dug themselves a 21-point hole, which proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome despite a strong rally in the fourth quarter.
As Golden State was walking off the court dejectedly, the camera caught Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry trying to cheer up Valkyries forward Gabby Williams.

“Here we go, Gabby!” screamed Curry.
Williams finished with 14 points, two rebounds, and four steals in 27 minutes. She struggled from the field, shooting 3-of-15. She also had four turnovers.
The two-time All-Star was coming off a heroic performance in Game 1, tallying 26 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Curry’s encouraging remark should help ease some of the pain after Game 2. He has been an ardent supporter of the Valkyries since the team was founded last year, including repeatedly touting Williams.
The 30-year-old forward grabbed attention before the WNBA Finals for calling out the media.
“The media’s never respected me. I’ve never expected them to. So that’s always been in the back of my head. I’ve never paid any mind to the media, so if the media’s praising me now, I don’t care,” said the three-time All-Defense.
Tiffany Hayes contributed 14 points, two rebounds, and three assists off the bench in Game 2, while Veronica Burton had 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Kayla Thornton and Cecilia Zandalasini combined for only seven points on 2-of-11 field goals.
Game 3 is at State Farm Arena on Wednesday.
