In an era when Premier League clubs routinely shatter transfer records, a successful free transfer can still represent outstanding business.

Jean-Marc Bosman helped change football forever with the landmark ruling that bears his name in 1995. Freetransfers have since delivered some of the Premier League’s most memorable bargains.

Best free transfers in Premier League history

Ruud Gullit – Chelsea (1995)

Some signings can transform a club’s image entirely, andRuud Gullit fits that brief. The Ballon d’Or winner pitched up in West London in the mid-nineties, at a time when Chelsea found themselves perennially marooned in mid-table.

Gullit made an immediate impression and finished runner-up for the 1995/96FWA Footballer of the Year award, with the Dutch icon’s impact paving the path for an eclectic collection of overseas stars, such as Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola, to head to Stamford Bridge.

Sol Campbell – Arsenal (2001)

Arguably the best free-transfer signing inPremier League history, and certainly one of its most controversial.

There was genuine astonishment when Arsene Wenger paradedSol Campbell as Arsenal‘s latest signing, with the Gunners having swooped to sign the England defender from bitter rivals Tottenham.

Campbell had his choice of Europe’s top teams, but instead opted for a controversial defection across North London.

Campbell helped Arsenal to a domestic double in his debut season, and was part of the club’s Invincible title winners in 2004.

Jay-Jay Okocha – Bolton (2002)

The sublimely skilled Jay-Jay Okocha swapped Paris Saint-Germain for Bolton Wanderers in the early noughties, a head-scratcher at the time, and one that looks even more amazing over two decades later.

The Nigerian formed part of a band of fancy overseas imports that Sam Allardyce persuaded to the Reebok Stadium, and delighted his new fans with a catalogue of outlandish skills. Okocha had flicks, tricks, and a spectacular goal collection during four fun-filled seasons in English football.

Michael Ballack – Chelsea (2006)

Fresh from winning back-to-back Premier League titles, Chelsea made a statement with the signing ofMichael Ballack from Bayern Munich. The best German footballer of his generation swapped Munich for Stamford Bridge, to join a formidable midfield group alongside Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien.

Ballack scored 26 goals in 167 games for Chelsea across four seasons, including a semi-final winner against Blackburn as Chelsea won the 2007 FA Cup. That was one of three FA Cup wins for the midfielder, who also claimed Premier League and League Cup winners’ medals.

James Milner – Liverpool (2015)

Frustrated at a squad role at Manchester City,James Milner moved to Liverpool when his contract expired in 2015. The Reds certainly got value, as Milner made 332 appearances across eight seasons and won seven trophies.

Vice-captain of the club under Jurgen Klopp, Milner has been credited with setting standards as Liverpool won the Champions League and Premier League under the German head coach.

Thiago Silva – Chelsea (2020)

It felt like a gamble for Chelsea andThiago Silva when the two came together in 2020. The veteran defender was approaching his 36th birthday when he made the move, after a decorated spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Instead, Silva showed that class is permanent, using all of his defensive nous to navigate the speed of the Premier League in his twilight years. His first season ended with an elusive Champions League success, later adding the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup to his collection.

Silva spent four seasons at Chelsea and made 155 appearances.
