Caitlin Clark shut down a reporter’s question about her friendship with Angel Reese after they won the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Clark, 24, spoke to reporters in the mixed zone after she and Reese helped the United States defeat France 97-79 in the final on Sunday, Sept. 13, but the Indiana Fever star didn’t seem to appreciate the final question thrown her way.

When a reporter asked Clark if she and Reese “are friends now” that they’ve played on the same team, Clark said, “We’ve always been friends. Don’t try to do that. Don’t try to do that.”

Reese and Clark both spoke highly of one another while competing in the FIBA Women’s World Cup. Reese said she’s having “fun” playing with Clark during an interview with TNT Sports on Sept. 10.

“We’ve played against each other so many times, so I’m sure we know each other’s game like the back of each other’s hand. She dishes it off to me, I got one to her today, so, it’s fun. We just continue to build chemistry because we know we’re going to be USA teammates for a while,” Reese said.

Clark previously addressed the “narratives” around her and Reese’s relationship during the tournament, telling ESPN, “No matter what, there’s always going to be people that create those narratives and say whatever they want to say. There’s definitely no stopping that and they’re always going to be there. I think for ourselves, like I said, it’s easy for us to just come in here and compete.”

In her TIME Athlete of the Year interview in Dec. 2024, Clark was asked about her relationship with Reese. “We’re not best friends, by any means, but we’re very respectful of one another,” she said at the time. “Yes, we have had tremendous battles. But when have I ever guarded her? And when has she guarded me?”
