'Cabinet turns on Starmer' and 'Meg's in' for palace stay

The Guardian says cabinet members previously loyal to the prime minister have told him he faces being forced out unless he sets a timetable for his departure. One unnamed minister has told the paper that it is “inevitable” that Sir Keir Starmer will soon be leaving Downing Street.

The Times says the Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander have pressed the prime minister to say when he is leaving. They are two in a series of what the paper has called “brutal” conversations that Sir Keir has had with colleagues.

The Daily Telegraph claims the prime minister’s wife is among the confidantes urging him to carry on. The paper reports he has a campaign website ready, in the event of a leadership election.

The Daily Mail says the prime minister faces a coup unless he announces his resignation in the coming days. It claims that allies of Andy Burnham believe he would be “content” if Sir Keir remained in Number 10 until September, to allow a new administration to be recruited. One ally of Burnham tells the paper “Keir’s campaign is fifty people in the Number Ten bunker who know they will never get another job in government”.

Elsewhere, the paper calls Reform UK’s candidate in Makerfield a “gaffe-prone disaster”, and asks how the party will field 650 candidates in a general election.

The Financial Times claims ministerial resignations are highly likely unless Sir Keir sets out a timetable for his departure by Tuesday’s cabinet meeting. The editorial in The Daily Express says “the mess we are in is bad for Britain”.

The Sun meanwhile, says that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, will stay in a royal residence – possibly Buckingham Palace – when they visit the UK next month. The report says the couple will bring their children with them, for a first meeting with the king in four years.

The Star says pubs and bars in Boston are facing the “perfect storm”, and have added extra deliveries from suppliers as they prepare to host England World Cup fans next week. The paper adds that England supporters drank forty-five-thousand pints in one Dallas bar alone, on the day of the team’s opening match with Croatia.
