The Buccaneers news: Rob Gronkowski says Baker Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield recently agreed to a $165 million contract extension. The signing removes uncertainty about Mayfield’s future with the Buccaneers. It also ensures that one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL won’t be leaving in free agency anytime soon.

During an appearance on Up & Adams, Rob Gronkowski is a fan of the signing and even called Mayfield a “top five quarterback.” The former star tight end also believes Mayfield would have performed well this season regardless of whether or not the contract extension came to fruition before Week 1.

“I think Baker is gonna be Baker no matter what,” Gronkowski said. “If the contract was done or if the contract wasn’t done, Baker is going to go out there and be a madman. He’s going to play his best football… This guy is an absolute animal out there. He’s gonna try everything that he needs to do to win football games with the deal that he had or with this new deal, it doesn’t matter.

“… He could have easily been paid top quarterback. ‘Oh, another quarterback sets the market.’ And that’s why I think it’s such a great deal because that didn’t happen. It’s a great deal for him because it gives him stability, but it’s also a great deal for the Buccaneers. He’s a top five quarterback, his numbers have proven it over the last three years.”

It’s a bold take. The 31-year-old has emerged as a star over the years, however. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2023 and 2024 and played a respectable brand of football in 2025.
