Broncos OC faces old teammate Patrick Mahomes: ‘Like my little brother’

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb has quite a few connections to the Kansas City Chiefs, notably including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Webb talks with Mahomes before every game, but noted that Week 1 of the 2026 season when Denver faces Kansas City may be an exception.

“I don’t think I’m going to text Pat until pregame, then I’ll hit him up,” Webb joked after Thursday’s practice.

Webb and Mahomes were teammates in college at Texas Tech, where Webb was the starter in 2013, before seeing his playing time diminish because of Mahomes’ rise for the Red Raiders. Webb talked about his current relationship with Mahomes.

“We always talk for a good 15 minutes (during pregame),” Webb said, via Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post. “We were great teammates when he was a freshman, I was a sophomore, when he was a sophomore and I was a junior. Then he made me transfer out to Cal. But him and I are still really, really close. I love Pat.”

Webb said that Mahomes was “like my younger brother” during their respective careers in Lubbock, Texas.

“He was like my younger brother, ‘cuz him and I were the only scholarship quarterbacks at the time because Baker (Mayfield) transferred out… Pat’s a great dude,” Webb said. “I’m glad he’s healthy and I’m sure he’ll be ready to rock.”

Webb went on to get drafted by the New York Giants, enjoy a short playing career, before entering into coaching. Mahomes, of course, got selected by the Chiefs, and the rest is history.

Webb’s connection to Spagnuolo came during his time with the New York Giants. ‘Spags’ was the defensive coordinator and interim coach of the Giants in 2017.

“He was our interim head coach for the last four or five weeks of the season, I believe, [with the Giants in 2017],” Webb said. “I was like a scout team quarterback, so back in the day, only the defensive players and myself got banana pudding from his wife. I miss ‘Spags.’ He’s a great dude, and one of the best defensive coordinators in this game’s history. He’ll be a tough challenge for us out of the gate.”

Webb will face Mahomes and Spagnuolo head-on, as he calls plays for Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and the offense in a primetime road matchup on Monday night.
