As if the New York Giants needed more bad news on Monday night, star players Brian Burns and Andrew Thomas suffered injuries late in the Giants’ lopsided 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Thomas, the team’s left tackle, suffered a groin injury.
Burns was helped off the field with what appeared to be a left ankle injury. Per John Harbaugh after the game, Burns has a low ankle sprain.
Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports that Burns was wearing a boot and being driven to the team bus on a golf cart.
The good news is that Burns was able to leave the field under his own power, which demonstrates that his ankle was stable enough to walk on and bear his weight. That suggests either a Grade 1 or Grade 2 sprain, per Harvard Health. A Grade 1 low ankle sprain has a recovery time of 1 to 3 weeks, while a Grade 2 sprain has a recovery time of 3-6 weeks.
Typically treatment for a low ankle sprain involves a RICE (Rice, Ice, Compression, Elevation) regimen, resting the ankle as much as possible for the first 24 to 48 hours, and icing regularly. Given that the Giants need to travel from Los Angeles to New Jersey, the use of a boot isn’t much of a surprise and shouldn’t be particularly alarming at this point. As with Jaxson Dart, we’ll get more information on his prognosis as the week unfolds.
Thomas has had an injury-plagued career, but has been healthy all spring and summer until now. Burns is coming off a career-best season. He was seen at the end of the game on the bench with a wrap on his left ankle.
The Giants also had an injury scare with wide receiver Malik Nabers in the second quarter, but he returned to action after having his shoulder checked.
These are all cornerstone players for the Giants that they cannot afford to be without.
We will get more information on all of the injuries, especially Dart’s, as soon as it becomes available.
