Every rookie enters the NFL with at least one question attached to his scouting report. For New York Jets second-round draft pick D’Angelo Ponds, that question has rarely involved his competitiveness. Instead, it’s centered on size. Ponds doesn’t possess the imposing frame of some of the league’s bigger corners.
That isn’t an issue for everyone. Again, the Jets still saw fit to select him early on Day 2. It’s no shock that football pundits raved about his selection. Now, there’s longtime NFL analyst Brian Baldinger. He’s among the experts who agree that Ponds’ size shouldn’t concern anyone.
During a recent film breakdown, the former player turned analyst explained exactly why he’s so intrigued by Ponds’ game. Throughout his critique, there was an overarching theme. Ponds is the ultimate competitor.
Whether defending the run, matching up in coverage, or attacking the football, D’Angelo Ponds consistently plays with an aggressiveness that often outweighs any perceived physical limitations. Baldinger highlighted Ponds’ willingness to throw his body around, battle bigger opponents, and trust his instincts rather than hesitating.
Those traits tend to translate well to the NFL. They’re also exactly the qualities Aaron Glenn has emphasized since taking over as the Jets’ head coach. The fit may matter as much as the talent. Talent gets players drafted. Mentality often determines who earns playing time.
Ponds enters training camp facing stiff competition in a revamped secondary, but his style of play appears to align perfectly with what New York wants defensively. If he continues showing the toughness and confidence Baldinger praised, he could carve out a meaningful role sooner than many expect.
Training camp will ultimately determine where Ponds lands on the depth chart.
For now, however, one of football’s most respected film analysts has given Jets fans another reason to be excited about one of the newest members of the roster.
