For Ted Simmons, the Milwaukee Brewers‘ first World Series championship means much more than finally getting a title. It also brings closure to a disappointment that followed him and his former teammates for more than four decades.

The Hall of Fame catcher was part of Milwaukee’s memorable 1982 team, which came agonizingly close to winning it all before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the World Series. More than 40 years later, that defeat still carried considerable weight for the players who experienced it.

Speaking during the Brewers’ championship celebrations, Simmons didn’t hide how deeply the loss affected the group.

“It was horrible… Never got over it. None of us did,” Simmons said in an interview with FOX6 News Milwaukee. However, the franchise’s breakthrough has finally given those former players a reason to put the past behind them.

“We’re now over it because this group has made it happen for all of us,” he added, recognizing the current generation for delivering something the 1982 squad couldn’t.

The championship has given Milwaukee’s longtime supporters and former players a moment they’ve waited decades to experience. Simmons also joined fellow franchise legends Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and Rollie Fingers in celebrating the historic achievement.

The Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in the World Series, securing the first championship in franchise history and giving the city a celebration unlike anything it had experienced before.
