Brady Singer Shows Signs of Improvement Amid Cincinnati Reds’ June Struggles

There may not have been a player on the Cincinnati Reds roster who needed a positive performance more than starting pitcher Brady Singer. The usual groundball pitcher was giving up home runs like it was his job through the majority of the season. He allowed a long ball in all but two of his starts, yielding multiple home runs in five of his 12 starts.

On Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, Singer went six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while recording five strikeouts and one walk. He had allowed seven walks over his previous nine innings pitched, spanning two starts, but his command was much more in check on Wednesday.

Despite the Reds getting great length from their starting rotation in San Diego, with Andrew Abbott going into the seventh inning, Chase Burns into the sixth and Brady Singer throwing six innings, Cincinnati dropped two of three, falling 5-4 on Wednesday after topping the Padres the previous day on the back of an extra-inning Sal Stewart home run.

It cannot be overstated how important it is for Singer to be more consistent for the Reds over the next two weeks. With the season on the brink of collapse and a potential fire sale of some of their assets possibly on the horizon, a middle-of-the-rotation arm providing quality starts in the absence of both Hunter Greene and Elly De La Cruz would be huge.

Cincinnati has not scored more than five runs in a game in June as the offense continues to slide. There have been glimpses of a turnaround, with Matt McLain starting to heat up and Sal Stewart hitting .254 with 13 home runs.

However, Eugenio Suarez is hitting just .211 and well below .200 since his return from the injured list. Cincinnati’s bullpen has been trending in the wrong direction, currently ranking 27th in MLB, according to Inside The Pen, as the Reds navigate the loss of Graham Ashcraft, Emilio Pagan and Pierce Johnson.

It isn’t a stretch to say that Tejay Antone is the only reliever who instills any confidence in Reds fans when they see him enter the game.

Singer’s consistency puts the Reds in a position to both win games and possibly use him in trade negotiations at the deadline for contending teams looking for starting-pitching depth.

Cincinnati is now 32-35 and in last place in the NL Central, 10 games behind first place and two games behind the fourth-place Chicago Cubs. The Reds are the only team below .500 in the division.
