Bradley Barcola: Time to Justify Liverpool’s Faith and Effort

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has been years in the making, but the real challenge begins once the French winger finally arrives at Anfield.

After months of negotiations and years of scouting, the Premier League champions appear close to completing a deal worth more than £100 million for the Paris Saint-Germain forward. It is a move that reflects Liverpool’s long-term approach to recruitment, but one that also carries considerable pressure.

A Target Years in the Making

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola did not emerge overnight.

The club first took serious notice of the winger during a friendly against Lyon in December 2022, when he caught the eye alongside another highly rated youngster, Rayan Cherki. Even after Barcola earned a move to PSG in 2023, Liverpool continued to track his development.

When signs emerged that the France international was growing frustrated with his role in Paris, Liverpool were well-positioned to act thanks to the groundwork they had already put in behind the scenes. Naturally, the fact that the Merseysiders don’t have any of their iconic front three (Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane) anymore and are searching for the next group to carry the torch helped there – Barcola will have seen a clear road ahead to potentially rise to stardom.

Holding Their Nerve Paid Off

PSG initially valued Barcola at around £145 million, a figure Liverpool considered excessive.

Instead of rushing into a deal, Liverpool remained patient. With Barcola reportedly unwilling to extend his contract, the French club’s negotiating position weakened and Liverpool eventually secured an agreement worth just over £100 million, with add-ons potentially taking the package to around £120 million.

That represents a significant saving, but it will only be viewed as smart business if Barcola delivers on the pitch.

What Barcola Brings to Liverpool

Barcola arrives with an impressive reputation.

Known for his pace, direct running and ability to stretch defences, the 23-year-old offers exactly the kind of dynamism Andoni Iraola wants from his wide players. He is most comfortable operating on the left flank, making him a natural replacement for Luis Díaz rather than Mohamed Salah.

His output has also been strong. During the 2024-25 campaign, he registered 21 goals and 21 assists across all competitions. While those numbers dipped last season, his ability to create and score chances remains highly regarded.

Liverpool will also value his work without the ball, particularly his pressing intensity and willingness to win possession high up the pitch.

More Questions Still Need Answering

Barcola’s arrival does not solve every issue in Liverpool’s squad.

The club continue to explore options for the right wing, while questions remain over the future of Cody Gakpo amid interest from elsewhere in the Premier League.

However, Liverpool’s transfer strategy has long centred on securing elite talent when it becomes available rather than simply filling positions. The recruitment team remain convinced Barcola falls into that category.

Now Comes the Hard Part

Liverpool’s spending over the past 15 months has been extraordinary, with Barcola set to become another major investment alongside Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

Yet recent history has shown that expensive signings are judged by performances, not transfer fees.

Liverpool have waited patiently for the opportunity to sign Barcola. They have won the negotiation battle. The next step is ensuring they have won the footballing one too.
