The Boston Celtics have emerged as a potential wild card in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade conversation. Following Jaylen Brown’s unusual comments on Twitch after Boston’s postseason exit, some around the league have speculated that he may be open to seeking a situation where he can lead his own team.
Antetokounmpo has also been mentioned as a possible target if Boston decides to make a dramatic change to its roster. Even so, it remains uncertain whether the Celtics have any interest in moving away from the group that delivered a championship in 2024. Brown and Jayson Tatum helped establish Boston as a title-winning team, and Tatum’s injury significantly impacted the club’s chances of competing for another championship over the last two seasons.
One Celtics insider believes Brad Stevens would think twice before splitting up that championship-winning partnership, even for a player of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s caliber.
The Celtics’ outlook on Giannis Antetokounmpo
Jay King of The Athletic noted that, based on Stevens’ remarks following the season, the Celtics executive appears strongly committed to keeping Brown and Tatum together rather than pursuing a blockbuster move.
“As enticing as an Antetokounmpo addition would be, Stevens didn’t sound ready to write off his current core. And he shouldn’t be quick to do so, either. Since Jayson Tatum’s rookie season, the Celtics have won more playoff games than any other organization,” the Celtics insider wrote.
King also expects the younger players surrounding Brown and Tatum to take meaningful steps forward next season, potentially giving Boston an even stronger supporting cast around its star duo.
“Even if Stevens doesn’t oversee a major overhaul this summer, there’s plenty of reason to think the Celtics could improve significantly next season. Tatum will be further removed from his torn Achilles. Derrick White will have a summer to iron out his shooting issues. The promising young players, including Neemias Queta, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo González, will all be one year older,” King added.
A more likely path for Boston would involve Stevens making targeted roster adjustments rather than overhauling the core of the team. He has consistently shown a strong belief in Brown’s value to both the franchise and the city, making a blockbuster move involving the star wing seem unlikely. If Giannis Antetokounmpo is ultimately dealt, league expectations are that the transaction would be completed before the NBA Draft.
