There’s been no shortage of espionage shows on streaming, but Black Doves takes a unique spin on the concept of veteran agents who have tried, unsuccessfully, to reintegrate themselves into society after trying to forge a new identity. In its first season, Black Doves gives Keira Knightley the action role that she always deserved as Helen Dawson, a member of the titular shadow organization now married to Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchanan), the Secretary of State for Defense and Conservative MP. Helen used to have close ties to the assassin Sam Young (Ben Whishaw), and they are forced to team up once more after Helen’s handler Reed (Sarah Lancaster) informs her of a threat that involves her past involvement in the organization and the loved ones who are ignorant of it. Although Season 2 of Black Doves is set to escalate the stakes by revealing a plot that goes to the top, the first season creatively offers an origin story for its protagonists.
While they have not shared contact with one another in seven years, Helen and Sam have a close relationship that began after his first assignment went awry. Sam had been assigned to kill the four Newman brothers, but choked when he discovered that the youngest of them, Hector (Luther Ford), was a child at the time; Sam and his partner Mike (Omari Douglas) were pursued by assassins until he was forced to kill his own father, who had also been a trigger man. Helen had a past of her own as “Daisy,” but both she and Sam make the mistake of thinking that they’ll be able to lead family lives without the past ever coming back to haunt them.
What Is ‘Black Doves’ About?
The inciting incident in Black Doves is the murder of Jason Davies (Andrew Koji), a Ministry of Justice civil servant who Helen had been having an affair with. Although Reed initially suspects that Jason’s involvement with Helen is what brought him into the line of fire, Sam discovers that he had actually been trying to contact Kai-Ming Chen (Isabelle Wei), whose late father Jun (Andy Cheung) had served as the Chinese Ambassador. Sam is able to rescue Kai-Ming, but it is Wallace who learns that Ambassador Chen was killed by American assassins who may have been in league with British intelligence. Webb’s marriage to Helen came shortly after they shared a one-night stand, and he has grown significantly more influential within the Conservative Party since; the contentious nature of their marriage is something that Reed is aware of, as she sends in her agent, Dani (Agnes O’Casey), to serve as Wallace’s new secretary and flirt with him, disclosing allusions to Helen’s relationship with Jason.
There is no shortage of action, as Helen kills Jason’s assassin in self-defense when he invades her home, and Sam teams up with fellow assassins Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) to kill the Newman brother who had kidnapped Ka-Ming. Although Helen attempts to get to the truth by infiltrating the American embassy to breach contact with the CIA agent Cole Atwood (Finn Bennett), it is revealed that Reed was pulling the strings and that she was sent with a threat. Cole had merely been using Kai-Ming to access the drug smuggler Trent Clark (Angus Cooper), whose mother, Alex (Tracey Ullman), is the head of a powerful crime family. Although Helen attempts to kill Trent when it is revealed that he was responsible for accidentally killing Jason, Sam is able to kill both him and his mother after he, Eleanor, and Kai-Ming are saved.

Helen spares Dani’s life, but shows her loyalty to protecting her husband by sending the recording of Ambassador Chen’s assassination to the CIA; this avoids any potential friction between China, the U.S., and the UK, with the case cleared up now that both Alex and Trent are dead. The only person implicated in the conspiracy is Prime Minister Richard Eaves (Adeel Akhtar), who had been directly involved in the cover-up. With Eaves’ reputation tarnished, Wallace is set up to take his place because he was innocent of any knowledge of the conspiracy.

The darker revelation, which gives Helen more cause to stick with her family, is that Reed reveals that Jason had been an MI5 agent sent to investigate her, and that he had shared information that was traded to Police Commissioner Stephen Yarrick (Sam Troughton), which had triggered the initial wave of assassinations. Although Helen is cleared of any betrayal because Jason did not implicate her in the final report he filed before his death, Sam is under watch because a recording was made of him executing the Trents. Sam is unable to reconnect with Michael and is instead offered a job by Hector, which he accepts before finally getting to meet Helen’s family. The seemingly happy Christmastime celebration, which sees Williams, Eleanor, and Kai-Ming all safe, is undercut because Reed has infiltrated Helen’s family through the use of a spy acting as a nanny. With Wallace prepared to take over the office of Prime Minister, the Black Doves now have access to the most powerful seat of power in Europe.
Black Doves Season 2 premieres November 5 on Netflix.
