The Chicago Bears have big plans for running back D’Andre Swift, who signed a three-year contract extension just before the start of the 2026 regular season. But that doesn’t mean he’s immune to consequences due to poor play from head coach Ben Johnson.
Last week against the New York Jets, Swift had a costly fumble that led to a Jets field goal. He finished the game with 15 carries for 58 yards, and he didn’t see the field after his fumble, which prompted speculation that Swift was benched, especially after Johnson denied that injury was the reason for Swift not returning to the field.
With Sunday’s game behind them, Johnson preached the importance of “short memories” in this game and said he’s already moving forward for what should serve as a learning lesson for Swift.

44 / 44“We all have to have short memories,” coach Ben Johnson said Monday. “We’ve got to learn from it, and coaches, players, all of us, we’re going to do some things that we don’t like at times. Could be a bad play call on my end, could be a missed tackle by our defense. All of those things happen. Learn from it and move on.”
Last season, Swift fumbled a total of two times in 223 carries. In the last three weeks, Swift has fumbled twice, and both were costly (but none more-so than Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings on the goal line). Swift needs to do a better job protecting the football, especially heading into a pivotal NFC North showdown against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
