Bears are now all-in right now after blockbuster move

· · 2 min read

The Chicago Bears are all-in. They’ve seen enough from Caleb Williams to believe that he is capable of leading them to a Super Bowl this season. Why else would they pull the trigger on a surprising and massive trade with the Tennessee Titans that will bring All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons into the fold while paying a huge premium?

Tom Pelissero reports that the Bears are sending two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder to the Titans in exchange for Simmons. That’s a quite a price tag. One could argue it’s a massive overpay. And it will be if Chicago does not take a major step this postseason.

Wiliams was spectacular in his sophomore season, culminating in an otherworldly performance against the Green Bay Packers that earned the franchise its first playoff win since 2010. Ben Johnson has been everything the organization wanted and more. Obviously, there is no better time for an NFL team to strike than when the quarterback and coach are comfortably in place. On the other hand, it’s not exactly a consensus opinion to say that Chicago’s Super Bowl window is realistically open right now.

Bears’ Super Bowl chances

Look, it’s sports where anything can happen. Williams is playing like a young Aaron Rodgers. Chicago is 5-2 with the only setbacks coming as a direct result of their quarterback’s injury. Maybe I am a bigger Bears doubter than the replacement fan. It just seems like the timeline has been moved up internally with the Simmons move.

To be clear, I like the confidence. It’ll send a clear and positive message to Williams. Though Minnesota is atop the NFC North at 6-0, few are expecting them to be able to sustain such success with a shaky offense. So the division crown is firmly in play (though it won’t be easy with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers also playing excellent ball).

Johnson’s offense is clicking and figures to keep on performing. The defense has been a bright spot as well, especially against the run. Overall teams are posting 20.4 points per game on that unit, which is already good enough to heighten Super Bowl optimism. Adding Simmons should improve it and it’s very logical to see a scenario where Chicago gets a path through Solider Field in the postseason and plays complementary football.

So perhaps the time to worry about all of those picks is later. It’s all about the present for the Bears.

They believe. The task now is making everyone else do the same.
