Gavi is one of many Barcelona players who are part of the Spanish contingent for the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

But with just two appearances, he hasn’t played a critical role for La Roja, who are set to face Portugal in the Round of 16.

Ahead of this high-octane encounter, Gavi spoke to the press, talking about the criticism that has followed him throughout the tournament and making clear that the outside noise would never force him to change his all-action style.

Gavi responds to criticism

Gavi started against Cabo Verde in Spain’s opening match and found himself among the most criticised players.

Asked whether he felt some people were waiting for him to slip up, the midfielder did not hold back.

“Yes, perhaps many people are waiting for me because I’m a player who goes into tackles hard, and perhaps many people don’t like that type of player. I always consider myself a very complete player, with many facets to my game,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

My best qualities are that competitiveness, that intensity I have on the field. I’ll never change. I know there will always be people waiting.”

Pressed on why he believes he attracts that kind of reaction, Gavi pointed to the passion that drives his game.

“I couldn’t tell you. Maybe that’s why, because I’m a very passionate player on the field, I always give my all for my team. There are always people who don’t like that and it makes them angry,” he added.

Ready whenever called upon

Gavi has had to settle for a rotational role at the tournament, but he said he is ready to help the team whenever he is required to step up.

“I’ve already said a couple of times that I’m here to help the team. I know the manager has faith in me; he always has.

As I tell him, I’m here for him and for the team whenever he needs me. This is a World Cup, and World Cups are won by those who stick together through thick and thin,” he said.

The Barcelona man also revealed the message he received from Luis de la Fuente after the opening game.

“He told me to stay calm, that I’d played well within our game plan. In the end, that’s essential. Like I said, you can come onto the pitch at any moment and be important for your national team,” Gavi added.

Competing at his second World Cup, Gavi believes this Spain side is better equipped than ever to go all the way, pointing to the strength in depth and unity within the squad.

“Perhaps we have a more complete squad in every position. Many of us have more experience in big games. Above all, I’d say the squad. The team is closer than ever, more united than ever. Coming together as a team is very important,” he concluded.

During the presser, Gavi also defended Cristiano Ronaldo amid criticism over the Portuguese international failing to keep up with the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, in terms of impact.
