The group stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 concluded this weekend, with Spain entering the Round of 32 after finishing first in their group.

As we enter the knockout rounds, the onus will be on Lamine Yamal to carry the hopes of the Spanish armada, which has lacked the spark despite boasting some of the best talents in world football.

Yamal, meanwhile, is also the joint-most valuable player in the World Cup along with Erling Haaland.

Lamine edges out Haaland for top spot

The 18-year-old shares that €200 million valuation with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, the only other player currently rated so highly. However, it is Lamine who claims the number one position, as per Transfermarkt.

The reason comes down to how Transfermarkt weighs its valuations. The portal places significant emphasis on the trajectory of a player’s value, prioritising it above almost all other factors.

When two players carry the same market value, the one whose valuation is trending upwards is ranked higher, which works firmly in Lamine’s favour.

That same principle explains why some other elite names find themselves lower than expected.

Vinicius Junior, for instance, sits at the bottom of the €140 million bracket. The Brazilian was valued at €150 million at the end of last year and once peaked at €200 million in December 2024, but his value has been gradually declining since then.

Spanish clubs dominate the top ten

The rankings also underline the strength of La Liga’s two giants. Of the ten most valuable players at the World Cup, half play their club football in Spain.

Real Madrid contribute three names to the list in Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, while Barcelona are represented by two in Lamine Yamal and Pedri.

The remaining places are filled by the likes of Haaland, Michael Olise, Joao Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha.
