Atletico Madrid are set to once again test Tottenham’s resolve over the coming days as the Spanish giants prepare a fresh bid for Cristian Romero, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Despite seeing their initial approaches get rebuffed earlier in the summer, Diego Simeone’s men have made Spurs’ skipper their standout target this summer.
Romano reported on Friday that the Atletico hierarchy remain in constant dialogue with all parties and Los Rojiblancos are preparing a new official bid.
While the Argentinian international might have also been linked with fellow European giants such as Inter Milan and Barcelona this summer, Romano has suggested that Romero has already expressed his desire to join Simeone’s side.
While Tottenham might have eventually dragged themselves over the finishing line back in May as they clung to their Premier League status on the final weekend, it was widely accepted that Romero would be actively seeking a move away.
Featuring in all seven of Argentina’s matches in their run to the World Cup final last month, the 28-year-old has often been a figure of frustration among the Tottenham fanbase.
Shown two separate Premier League red cards last season and only making 23 top-flight appearances, it has been suggested that a fresh start could be best for all parties.
Speaking to the press last week, Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi stated that he would “respect the will” of any player who wanted to leave the club this summer.
However, while Tottenham might be set to watch their skipper leave north London this summer, Romano has reported that another of Spurs’ defensive superstars will be extending his stay in the English capital.
The Italian transfer guru also reported on Friday that Micky van de Ven has officially agreed on a new long-term deal with the Lilywhites and an announcement will be made over the coming days.
