The Athletics had a problem last season. Their offense was high-powered, while the pitching staff had trouble keeping opposing teams from scoring.
Some were hoping that would change this year with the addition of Aaron Civale, but he has not been the answer. This pitching staff is still struggling, while the offense has lost some key contributors.
They lost Brent Rooker for the season earlier in June as he had a knee injury that required surgery. The team is also currently without Jacob Wilson, who’s dealing with right thumb inflammation, and Tyler Soderstrom with a left hip impingement.

Athletics slip in power rankings after another lackluster week
Not having some of the big boppers in the lineup last week really hurt the A’s. They were stacked up against the Los Angeles Dodgers and then the Miami Marlins.
The Athletics were able to take one game from the Dodgers, but lost the series 1-2. They were then swept by the Marlins in a three-game series, making for a 1-5 week.
With this, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller has bumped the team down from No. 23 to No. 25 in his latest power rankings.
“It feels like a lifetime ago that the A’s were a .500 club, sitting just a half a game back in the AL West standings. In reality, that was barely two weeks ago. But they haven’t won a series since, stricken by a power outage of just 10 home runs in their last 14 games. Shea Langeliers was named the starting catcher for the AL in the All-Star Game, but he sure has cooled off over the past month—.915 OPS in first 56 games: .610 OPS since.”
While there isn’t a lot of hope for this team at the moment, they are only 5.5 games out of first place in the division. If they can catch a hot streak and other teams in the division have a poor week, they will be right back in the thick of things.
