ASUU rejects renaming of UNIMAID to Muhammad Buhari University


The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has vehemently rejected the Federal Government’s decision to rename the institution after former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Following an emergency congress held on July 24, 2025, ASUU-UNIMAID, alongside the Student Union Government and stakeholders, described the move as:

A flagrant disregard for university autonomy

A disruption of academic tradition

A direct affront to UNIMAID’s heritage and identity

ASUU asserts that the renaming was arbitrary, ill-conceived, and lacked proper consultation with the university community, alumni, and the public.

The union demands an immediate and unconditional reversal of the decision.

ASUU-UNIMAID has resolved to pursue legal action to preserve the university’s original identity.

ASUU calls on all branches, zones, and the national body to:

Resist legislative endorsement of the name change

Engage civil society, students, and the National Assembly

Defend the autonomy and integrity of Nigeria’s public universities.
