ASUU gives governments ultimatum over 2025 agreement payments

The Federal and Kano State governments have been called upon by the North West University, Kano chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to immediately settle outstanding allowances contained in the 2025 ASUU–FGN agreement.

The union said it is running out of patience, warning that any further delays could destabilise the university system.

In a statement issued in Kano on Monday following its congress last week, the ASUU chapter in the university also expressed concern over the non-implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance, which were expected to take effect in January 2026.

According to the university’s ASUU chairperson, Mansur Said, “no significant progress has been made” despite several correspondences with the university administration and the Kano State government.

He noted that the welfare of university staff is central to stability and productivity in the sector, adding that delays in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily create hardship for staff and lead to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action.

The union urged stakeholders to intensify efforts to secure a speedy resolution, stressing that honouring commitments made to university workers is essential for sustaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in higher education.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue but warned that its patience was wearing thin.

“We expect that the necessary action will be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students and the university community,” ASUU stated.
