The Houston Astros have exercised a $13.35 million club option on infielder Isaac Paredes for the 2027 season, ensuring he remains under contract for another year following a productive 2026 campaign.

The decision, which the team announced on Monday evening, comes as little surprise after Paredes made an emphatic statement with his bat in his first full season with Houston. The 27-year-old finished the year with a .262/.360/.447 batting line, an .806 OPS, 25 home runs, 27 doubles, one triple and 94 RBIs across 155 games. His RBI total tied for sixth in the American League.

Paredes also demonstrated improved plate discipline, recording a 10.8% walk rate while striking out in just 13.4% of his plate appearances, the lowest mark of his career. Although his defensive performance at third base was considerably less convincing, yielding -7 Defensive Runs Saved and -4 Outs Above Average, he provided some additional flexibility by making short appearances at first and second base.

Paredes’ offensive influence reached its zenith at Daikin Park. He launched 14 home runs in 324 plate appearances at home, compared to 11 homers across 335 plate appearances on the road.

The option exceeds his salary of $9.35 million in 2026 by $4 million. However, exercising it could save the Astros money, as Paredes was projected to receive approximately $15 million through arbitration had Houston declined the option. The 2027 campaign will be his final season of salary arbitration eligibility.

The Astros’ decision also comes with potential roster implications. Houston enters the offseason with five established infielders competing for four positions: Paredes, Carlos Correa, Jeremy Peea, Jose Altuve and Christian Walker. Correa and Pena are healthy again after injuries disrupted their 2026 campaigns, while Yordan Alvarez occupies the designated hitter position.

Consequently, the Astros could explore trade possibilities involving Paredes or Pena to address their crowded infield. Both players are also approaching free agency, with 2027 representing their final year of team control.

For now, Paredes remains part of Houston’s plans, although his eventual position is uncertain. The Astros could also face a decision involving Walker, who is still owed approximately $20 million on his contract.

One additional detail could affect Paredes’ contract. His club option could become a mutual option if he finishes among the top 10 in American League MVP voting. The award results are scheduled to be announced on November 12.
