Arteta urges Arsenal to ‘go again’ at Brighton after winning start

Mikel Arteta urged his Arsenal players to “go again” and cap a perfect three-game week by winning away at Brighton in Saturday’s Premier League clash.

Arsenal started another gruelling seven-day run with a 2-0 away league victory over Sunderland, before thrashing Ipswich Town 4-2 at Portman Road in the EFL Cup third round.

Arteta’s side had also overcome Napoli 1-0 away from home in their Champions League opener the week before, making their trip to the Amex Stadium a fourth straight game on the road.

Arsenal have won every competitive game so far this season, managing a perfect four top-flight wins on top of the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Champions League, but Arteta knows his side must keep up their standards.

“The last week has been tough in Napoli, in Sunderland, then coming here again,” Arteta said after the Ipswich win.

“But again look at the attitude of the players, the desire they showed, and that’s what we have to do – go again.”

But Brighton have made a strong start to their own season, smashing Coventry City 5-0 at the CBS Arena last time out in the league.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side also hammered Aston Villa 4-0 in their opener, before a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Chelsea and a 1-1 draw with unbeaten Leeds United.

Brighton were in EFL Cup action in midweek, too, mounting a remarkable comeback from two goals down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Charalampos Kostoulas led the turnaround against Man Utd, scoring one and playing a key role in the winner from substitute Maxim De Cuyper.

The Greek is in fine form, too, having found the net against Coventry, but chances may be harder to come by against an Arsenal team that have conceded just one league goal.

Pascal Gross will be expected to pull the strings for Brighton’s midfield, having assisted two and scored from the penalty spot in the thrashing of Coventry.

Since his Premier League debut in August 2017, Gross has recorded 50 assists in the competition, the joint-fourth most by any midfielder in this period (level with Bernardo Silva on 50).

Indeed, Gross (13) and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard (12) lead the league for the most chances created so far this season as well.

Bukayo Saka has been involved in five goals in six Premier League away games against Brighton (three goals, two assists), scoring on each of his last three visits to the Amex Stadium.

The only Arsenal players to score in four or more straight away appearances against an opponent in the competition are Thierry Henry at Middlesbrough (four between 2000 and 2003) and Robert Pires at Tottenham (five between 2001 and 2005).

Saka was also on target last time out in the competition, scoring from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time against Sunderland to make it three goals in four league games.

Arsenal will fancy their chances of heading into the international break with a perfect five league wins, and the Opta supercomputer backs them to do exactly that.

They are unbeaten in their last six Premier League visits to Brighton (W4 D2), having lost two and drawn one of their first three trips to the Amex Stadium.

In fact, Arsenal have won four of their last six top-flight games against Brighton (D2), as many as they had in their first 12 in contests with the Seagulls (D3 L5).

But it is not just Brighton who have struggled against Arsenal. The Gunners have won each of their last nine Premier League games, conceding just two goals in the process.

Only twice before have they won 10 in a row in the competition – 10 between March-May 1998 and 14 between February-August 2002. Both of those runs also included a title win.

However, Brighton will have some hope – they have beaten Premier League champions in the last two campaigns at the Amex, overcoming Manchester City and Liverpool.

They had failed to win any of their first seven Premier League home games against reigning champions (D2 L5), conceding at least four goals in each defeat.
