Netflix’s New 30-Part Psychological Drama Is Southern Gothic TV Done Right

Netflix‘s new 30-part psychological drama turns a death-row prison release into a haunting Southern Gothic story about guilt, family, and redemption after tragedy. Released in 2013, this newly added Netflix series follows Daniel Holden, who is freed after spending nearly two decades incarcerated in solitary confinement, returning to his small, fictional hometown of Paulie, Georgie. Once there, Daniel must readjust back to normal life, reconnect with his family, and avoid conflict with his community, who believe he is still guilty despite newfound DNA evidence. Paulie is torn by tragedy that occurred several decades prior, adding to the Southern Gothic feel of the new Netflix show.

Rectify was just added to Netflix on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and is one of the best examples of modern Southern Gothic drama on television. With its near-perfect 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and equally impressive audience score of 92%, it’s one of the best new Netflix series to binge-watch this week and one of the highest-rated original series of the 2010s. Rectify has mostly flown under the radar despite its universal critical acclaim because it was only available exclusively on SundanceTV. Now, it has officially been added to the world’s largest streaming platform and is worth checking out this week for fans of psychological and Southern Gothic drama series.

Rectify might be one of the most celebrated series you’ve never heard of, and it is officially ready to binge on Netflix this week. The series is one of the strongest examples of modern Southern Gothic television with several specific genre tropes, such as its rural setting, religious undertones, and the consistent presence of a haunted past. Other popular series with Southern Gothic themes include HBO’s Sharp Objects, Apple TV’s Cape Fear, and HBO’s True Detective. That said, Rectify has a real case for being one of the best of the esteemed bunch.

In the first season of Rectify, Daniel is released from prison after new DNA evidence exonerates him of the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hanna Deen. Rectify season 1 consists of only six episodes and mostly centers on Daniel’s first week as a free man back in his small hometown. Although Daniel is declared to be innocent, many members of the community, including the district attorney who put him in prison, refuse to accept that he did not kill Hanna. Daniel moves back into his childhood home, processing his traumatic experience while also receiving new targets on his back, even though Hanna’s real killer remains at large.

Rectify Is One Of The 2010s’ Most Acclaimed Drama Series

Critics and audiences gave Rectify high praise during its four-season run from 2013 to 2016. After debuting with an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, Rectify earned a near-perfect 96% RT score for its second season, followed by two perfectly rated 100% RT installments in both seasons 3 and 4. Because of this, Rectify is one of those rare series that actually gets better over time. USA Today writes of Rectify season 1, “The subject matter is heavy, but the episodes are beautifully written and move at a contemplative, but never boring, pace.” Similarly, HollywoodChicago.com gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars and called it “at once familiar and unlike anything else on TV right now.”

One thing to know about Rectify before diving in is that it’s considered a slow-burn series, so it’s not necessarily designed to keep viewers on the edge of their seats with non-stop action and suspense. Rectify is often described as meditative and heavily character-focused, taking place over just a matter of days to create a deliberately tight, nearly inescapable feeling as Daniel adjusts moment by moment to life outside prison. It’s similar in this way to HBO’s crime drama The Night Of, which also rewards viewers’ patience through slow-burn pacing. Now that it’s on Netflix, there’s nothing preventing viewers from giving Rectify an honest shot this week.
