Arteta compared to Alex Ferguson over weekend outburst

Mikel Arteta was enraged that Sunderland were awarded a penalty when Arsenal faced the Black Cats at the weekend, even though the Gunners still won.

It was a tough game, as the home side were physical and made Arsenal uncomfortable for much of the match. However, the Gunners still managed to get the job done and secure an important victory.

As it seemed Arsenal were on top and close to opening the scoring, Sunderland were awarded a penalty. David Raya saved the spot-kick, and the Gunners immediately went to the other end to open the scoring through Bruno Guimaraes.

A late penalty from Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-0 win, but despite the victory, Arteta was not happy with the decision to award Sunderland a penalty. The Arsenal boss ranted at the end of the game, making his feelings about the decision clear.

The Gunners will continue to focus on getting results, but they have always asked for fairness from referees. Arteta has also admitted that the referees’ job is difficult, including when a late West Ham goal was disallowed against Arsenal last season.

His frustration over the Sunderland decision shows how strongly he feels about important refereeing decisions going against his team. Even after Arsenal secured all three points, the penalty remained a major talking point for their manager.

Journalist Isaan Khan believes Arteta sounded a lot like Sir Alex Ferguson with his latest rant. He writes in the Daily Mail:

“There was an element of Sir Alex Ferguson about his words. Winning wasn’t enough. He wants to make sure that the refereeing fraternity are aware that any major decisions which, in his eyes, go incorrectly against Arsenal will be called out.”

Arteta will now want his players to focus on continuing their positive results, rather than allowing refereeing decisions to become a distraction. Arsenal showed their resilience by overcoming Sunderland and securing a 2-0 victory.

For the Gunners, the most important thing is that they left with the result they wanted. Arteta may remain unhappy with the penalty decision, but his side ultimately responded well and maintained their winning momentum.
