Arsenal ‘setting the standard with women’s football’, says Stanway

Georgia Stanway believes Arsenal are “setting the standard with women’s football” as she explained her reason for joining the Gunners.

After four years with Bayern Munich, Stanway made the move to the Women’s Super League side on a free transfer this summer.

The 27-year-old made 79 league appearances for Bayern, scoring 24 goals and providing 19 assists in the German top flight.

Stanway’s 43 direct goal contributions were the most among midfielders in the competition since her debut, while only Svenja Huth (26) recorded more assists in that time.

Arsenal have been busy in the transfer market, with the likes of Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci and Lisa Baum also joining Renee Slegers’ side.

Stanway revealed she was determined to join the Gunners’ project after hearing about their interest in her.

“I knew I wanted to take the next step,” Stanway told the Women’s Football Weekly podcast.

“I really like the fact Arsenal came in for me when I wasn’t available. It’s a really nice feeling to be wanted.

“What Arsenal are building within England, within the WSL, within Europe, is something I want to be part of.

“It’s setting the standard with women’s football.

“It’s a little bit of a new chapter. A lot of quality has come in. Arsenal obviously went hunting in the Bundesliga, which is a league that sometimes goes under the radar.

“From the outside, everybody wants to be a part of Arsenal and what they’re about to create.”

Arsenal begin their WSL campaign on September 6, when they face Brighton away from home.

The Gunners have not won the league title since 2018-19, finishing second last season, four points behind Manchester City.
