Arizona vs. Northern Illinois: Players of the Game

After a tough road loss last week against BYU, the Arizona Wildcats returned home to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies. The ‘Cats had a very slow start, but managed to get going and push the game out of reach quickly.

It was also a historic night for the program as the all-time passing yards record was broken. With that, let’s take a look at the Players of the Game.

Game Stats: 31-for-34, 325 yds, 4 TD; 6 car, 4 yds, 1 TD

Fifita was easily the best player on the field Saturday night. He was efficient as anyone could ever ask for, completing 91% of his passes. Not only that, he made many elite throws throughout the night. One such example was Fifita stepping up and throwing Chris Hunter open, hitting him in-stride for a big touchdown across the middle of the field. His pass to Spivey on the corner route for the Spider-Man touchdown was placed perfectly. He also had an impressive 30-yard touchdown run late in the game. Overall, a very impressive performance by Fifita.

Game Stats: 10 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sack

Blomstrom has been a force since the season’s started. Saturday was no exception. Blomstrom was consistently around the ball whenever he was on the field. He ended up record 10 tackles and recorded a half sack as well. On that play, Blomstrom and Taye Brown came flying into the backfield from the edge and slammed into NIU QB Taron Dickens quickly. Blomstrom has quickly made a name for himself in Tucson with his play so far this season.

Game Stats: 1 KOR, 23 yds; 2 PR, 69 yds, 1 TD

Smith showed why he was chosen as a returner as a true freshman. Late in the second quarter, NIU boomed a punt to the 31-yard line. Smith grabbed it and proceeded to break the ankles of a would-be tackler. He then weaved his way fluidly down the field and into the end zone. He had another impressive play he had that won’t get talked about. On the next NIU punt, Smith fumbled the ball, but instead of trying to pick it up to make a play, he wisely fell on top of it to ensure Arizona maintained possession. Not a play you see a true freshman normally make in the heat of the moment, but that was a great decision by the speedster.
