Arizona Cardinals training camp: Jacoby Brissett easing into practice time

It’s surprising that anyone was surprised when Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett practiced Friday, but wasn’t on the field for any of the 11-on-11 portions of the workout.

After all, Brissett was with the team for only a few days in the June mandatory minicamp and didn’t practice as he was pushing to accomplish a restructuring of the one year remaining on the two-year contract he signed in 2025. Nothing has yet to be finalized on that.

While he was away, Gardner Minshew II and rookie Carson Beck, along with Kedon Slovis, were in meetings and on the field getting reps and learning head coach Mike LaFleur’s offense.

LaFleur is structuring camp practices in four-day blocks, something he learned from Sean McVay with the Rams, and this first block is without pads by NFL rules.

“We’re going to take it one block at a time,” LaFleur explained Thursday. “What I mean by one block at a time is we basically have a four-day block: three practices, one jog-through in there, and then having a day off.”

Saturday will be the jog-through, then practice Sunday and off Monday. It’s possible Brissett could get additional work in the second block.

“I told the guys, I think we’re still all a little bit in the learning phase,” LaFleur said. “We had one offseason through Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3; 10 practices. So, there’s no doubt these first few blocks are still an install learning phase. And then whenever that time is right, that’s when we’ll start to say, ‘OK, here’s how we’re going to hammer down and here’s what it’s going to look like come that first week.'”

As for where Brissett stands this early, LaFleur said, “He’s a really smart dude who’s played a lot of football, seen a lot of football. He doesn’t have to learn defenses around this league. It’s just learning the terminology and the whys behind what we’re doing. Some of it probably didn’t even need to be explained why because he’s done it a million times.

“And you know, we all somewhat run all the same stuff. There are different details, and there are different reasons of why we’re going to do it, but I like where he’s at from a learning standpoint, and I think he’d say the same thing.”
