Anthony Richardson Sr. will continue to serve as chief backup to Daniel Jones. The Indianapolis Colts have made the decision to keep starting Jones, at least for their upcoming Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen appeared to be considering making a switch from Jones to Richardson following the team’s brutal 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville. But on Monday, Steichen touched on why Indianapolis’ QB1 role remains in the hands of Jones.
“Obviously, the quarterback takes the brunt of it all,” Steichen said, via Stephen Holder of ESPN. “As we know, that’s what the quarterback signs up for. And it’s not all on him, right? It’s everything. It’s all encompassing. It’s everyone doing their job, being on the same page, the route discipline, the route detail, the blocking, the protections — all those things tie into it.”
Anthony Richardson Continues to Believe in Jones

Jones went 19/28 for 144 passing yards and a touchdown with two interceptions before getting replaced by Richardson in the second half of the Jags game. Richardson went 2/2 for eight yards (zero touchdowns, zero turnovers) and rushed twice for a total of four yards on the ground.
Following the game, Richardson showed his complete support for Jones.
“We’re sticking with him,” Richardson said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “He’s got my full support, I’m supporting him 1,000%. It’s tough to play quarterback in this league, it’s tough to play quarterback in general. When the spotlight’s on you like this, you’ve just got to keep your head down and keep working.”
The 2-6 Colts are on a four-game slide, but it’s still not too late for them to turn things around.
