Angels’ Outfield Depth in Trouble After Josh Lowe Injury Scratch

The Los Angeles Angels scratched outfielder Josh Lowe from Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees with neck stiffness.

The Angels’ outfield is severely lacking in depth, as they currently have just four outfielders listed on their active roster—one of whom is Lowe. Wade Meckler will move over to right field to cover for Lowe, with Jose Siri getting the start in left field.

Lowe, an offseason acquisition from the Tampa Bay Rays, has been with the Angels for nearly the entire season, only being away from the team during a month-long stint in Triple-A. He can play any position across the outfield, providing valuable depth in each position for the Halos.

The 28-year-old has 10 homers on the year, driving in 27 runs through 95 games this season. He has a .625 OPS this season, which would be the lowest mark of his career if he finishes the season at this pace.

His best stretch of baseball came after the Angels recalled him from Triple-A in June, where he went 8-for-18 through his final six games of June. He hit a homer and drove in four runs during that stretch, posting an OPS north of 1.000 during his hot streak.

Siri, Meckler and Mike Trout are the only other players explicitly listed as outfielders on the Angels’ roster, though they have other players who could stand in if needed.

Other than Lowe, Siri, Meckler and Trout, the Angels have a few options if they need to bring someone into the outfield later in the year.

Kyren Paris came up from Triple-A Tuesday for the Angels’ September call-ups, and he has plenty of experience in the outfield despite primarily playing in the middle of the infield. 2024 first-round pick Christian Moore also primarily plays in the infield, but the Angels tested him out in left field when they called him up earlier in the season.

Lastly, Adam Frazier has spent some time in the outfield this season for the Angels, and could fill in if needed.

Even still, the Angels’ outfield is running extremely thin, and remains an area they’ll have to reinforce come the offseason.
