Andoni Iraola Draws Bournemouth as Liverpool Eye Carabao Cup Semi-Finals
Liverpool are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, and Andoni Iraola got the one draw he plainly did not want. After beating Chelsea on penalties and watching Bournemouth knock out Aston Villa, Liverpool were paired with the south coast club in the last eight.
That gives Iraola another meeting with a club he knows inside out. He has already faced Bournemouth once this season, when Liverpool won 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium in September. Now comes a second reunion, this time at Anfield, with a place in the semi-finals on the line.
The Liverpool head coach did not pretend otherwise when asked about the draw. He said, “Honestly, I was talking before the draw and I said, ‘The only team I don’t want is Bournemouth…’ For me, it’s special. They know me very well, they are playing very well lately, in a good moment, but it is what it is.
“We haven’t been very lucky with the draws, we have played Spurs and Chelsea already and now Bournemouth. That is going to be obviously special for me, but we have to earn the right to be in the semi-finals and I hope we can do it here at home again.”
That sums it up well enough. Sentiment matters for about five minutes. Then it becomes a football problem.
Liverpool do at least have the obvious advantage of playing at Anfield. In cup ties like this, that matters. So does momentum, and there is plenty of that around this competition now. With Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United already out, the bracket looks lighter than it did a few weeks ago. Nobody will hand Liverpool a route to Wembley, but the path is there.

Carabao Cup Draw Gives Liverpool a Real Opening
This is why Iraola has treated the competition seriously from the start. Domestic cups are often dressed up as distractions until the draw opens up. Then everybody suddenly remembers that silverware still counts, and that a semi-final is one round away.
Bournemouth will not arrive as obliging visitors. Back in September, they were still looking for traction under Marco Rose. That has changed quickly. Results have improved, confidence has followed, and they have shown they can punish good sides when given space and rhythm.
Bournemouth Threat Makes Quarter-Final Complicated
For Liverpool, this tie is awkward for personal reasons and dangerous for football reasons. Bournemouth know Iraola, and Iraola knows them. That usually strips away some of the surprise and leaves a game to be decided by execution, control and nerve.

Iraola may not have asked for Bournemouth, but he has been handed an opportunity. He would be foolish to complain too much about that. Further details of the draw and scheduling have been reported here.
