Andoni Iraola’s time at Liverpool has been a bit mixed so far.

The Spaniard was unbeaten across all competitions until they faced Manchester City last weekend when they were beaten 3-0.

Before Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, that game was fairly even but, after that point, things just went pear-shaped.

However, the clash did outline where the Reds’ biggest weaknesses are among their ranks.

This then led to many new rumours emerging with Liverpool even reigninting their interest in some of their long-term targets.

And now, Iraola is even getting involved with the deals with the Spaniard being one of the main driving forces behind a potential deal for a Premier League star.

Andoni Iraola is ‘pushing’ to get a deal for Alex Scott over the line

It goes without saying that Liverpool’s midfield needs a lot of work doing to it.

At the moment, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister seem to be Iraola’s preferred duo but, since the Hungarian can barely win any duels, a lot of the tackles and defensive work ends up being put on the Argentinian’s shoulders.

At times, this makes sense as Szoboszlai was much better in attack than the former Brighton man last term but, since the duo are being used as a double pivot, they should be sharing the roles evenly.

However, since that clearly hasn’t been the case, transfer links with new midfielders have now started to emerge and, as per a fresh update from journalist Dom Smith, Iraola is now “pushing” for an agreement with Bournemouth over the transfer of Alex Scott.

“Liverpool could revive their interest in Alex Scott in January as they look to strengthen their midfield. Some believe Andoni Iraola is pushing for a move for his former Bournemouth midfielder,” he wrote.

“Bournemouth are open to offers above £100m and would seriously consider a substantial bid slightly below that figure. However, a January sale will only happen if Premier League survival looks likely.

Alex Scott would be a huge investment from Liverpool

Obviously, Liverpool need to add some new midfielders to their ranks.

Ever since Fabinho exited Anfield, the Reds haven’t managed to have a natural number six among their ranks.

In the Brazilian’s absence, Mac Allister and Gravenberch have both tried to plug the gap and, while the Dutchman had an impressive season in that position during the 2024-25 campaign, last year, he was beyond poor.

This term, much of the same has occurred again and, even though fans knew how badly their first-team squad needed new defensive midfielders, Liverpool chose against signing them.

Indeed, the additions that they did make have helped the Anfield outfit out massively but, Liverpool bringing someone such as Scott in would be smart.

A deal would cost Liverpool an awful lot of money to get over the line but, since he knows how Iraola’s system works, has a good relationship with the Spaniard, and already has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, there isn’t really a better option for Liverpool to explore than the Cherries’ number six.

Here’s hoping that an agreement can be reached as soon as possible, potentially even in January.
