Massimiliano Allegri believes as many as eight teams can win Serie A this season, but he has backed Inter to retain the Scudetto in 2026-27.
Cristian Chivu enjoyed a strong debut campaign with Inter, becoming only the fifth coach to win the Scudetto in his first season in the competition with the Nerazzurri.
Napoli won the Supercoppa Italiana last season and finished second in the league under Antonio Conte, but are now under the guidance of Allegri this season.
It’s been a summer of change among the top Serie A clubs, with Ruben Amorim replacing Allegri at AC Milan, while former Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso is now in charge of Lazio.
Inter won the league by 11 points last season, scoring the most goals (89) and conceding the joint-fourth-lowest (35), and they are backed to finish top of the pile once again.
Ahead of their season-opening win over Monza, the Opta supercomputer assigned Inter a 35.1% chance of retaining their Serie A crown. Roma, Como and Juventus are set to be the closest challengers to Chivu’s side.
Roma are handed a 12.7% chance of winning the title, slightly lower than Como’s 13.6% probability. Juventus’ chances, meanwhile, are rated at 11.4%, with Napoli (7.5%) and Atalanta (6.8%) also in with a shout in the pre-season simulations.
“Inter are the favourites because they hold the trophy, but there will be at least eight teams to keep an eye on,” Allegri said on the title race.
“As well as the Nerazzurri and ourselves, also Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Como and Atalanta.”

Napoli began their Serie A campaign with a victory on Saturday, with Kevin De Bruyne and Antonio Vergara coming off the bench and registering a goal and an assist each to help seal a 2-0 victory over Genoa Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris.
They have won their opening match of a Serie A season more than any other side over the last 10 editions (nine wins), and they take on Como in their next league match.
Napoli have won each of their first two Serie A matches in seven of the previous nine seasons in the competition. The exceptions are 2019-20 (W1 L1) and 2024-25 (W1 L1), in which they still managed to secure at least one victory.
However, Como are unbeaten in their last three Serie A matches against Napoli (W1 D2), after losing all four of the previous encounters, and Allegri set out his plans for the season, where he plans to fight on all fronts.
“It’ll be a beautiful and demanding year, we’ll have to be good at staying in it in Serie A, the Champions League and the Coppa Italia,” Allegri added.
“The centenary comes around only once, and so we’ll have the responsibility of producing an excellent season.
“In the Champions League you have to get through the league phase and then reach the play-offs or ideally the last 16.”
