Caitlin Clark’s competitive fire has helped turn her into one of the WNBA’s biggest stars, but Indiana Fever teammate Aliyah Boston believes the All-Star guard needs to choose her battles more carefully. Clark entered the WNBA All-Star break averaging 21.0 points, 7.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game, ranking among the league leaders in both scoring and assists. She also helped guide Indiana to a 17-10 record through its first 27 games. However, one unnecessary exchange during a blowout victory left Clark dangerously close to an automatic suspension.

Boston revisited the incident during a live edition of the “Post Moves” podcast with Candace Parker, and she did not attempt to defend her teammate. Instead, the Fever center openly questioned why Clark allowed a brief war of words to result in her seventh technical foul of the season.

Clark received the technical during the third quarter of Indiana’s 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun on July 22. After Clark was fouled by Connecticut center Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Sun guard Saniya Rivers approached her and claimed she had been locking down the Fever star. Clark responded by directing Rivers’ attention toward the scoreboard, where Indiana held a commanding 95-67 lead.

Officials assessed Clark and Rivers double technical fouls. Boston understood why those watching immediately became concerned when the call was made.

“She be playing around,” Boston said. “Like, she got the tech, and everybody was like, ‘Oh, here she go.'”

Parker noted that the Fever were already leading by nearly 30 points when the exchange occurred. That made Clark’s decision to respond even more difficult for Boston to understand.

“Like, why would she do that?” Boston said. “No, it genuinely made no sense. No, it made no sense.”

Boston jokingly suggested that Clark could direct her frustration toward her teammates instead. When Parker pointed out that Clark had already tried that approach, Boston pushed back and said the guard had not yelled at her.

The exchange between Boston and Parker was lighthearted, but the potential consequences for Indiana are serious.

Caitlin Clark is one technical foul away from suspension

Clark has accumulated seven technical fouls during the 2026 regular season. If she receives an eighth, she will be required to serve an automatic one-game suspension. Under the WNBA’s 2026 penalty structure, the eighth technical foul triggers the first suspension. Clark would then face another one-game suspension for every two additional technicals she receives after that.

The league also increased its financial penalties before the season. Technical fouls Nos. 4 through 7 carry a $1,000 fine, while each technical beginning with the eighth results in a $1,500 fine. Clark has made it clear that she does not want to eliminate the emotion that has fueled her success. Her intensity is an important part of her game, particularly as she navigates constant defensive pressure and increased physicality.

Still, there is a difference between remaining competitive and risking availability during the most important part of the season. The Fever need Clark on the floor as they attempt to secure playoff positioning and establish themselves as legitimate championship contenders.

Indiana’s blowout win over Connecticut showed exactly how valuable she is. Clark finished with 27 points and 11 assists, helping the Fever produce a franchise-record 123 points. Her technical foul was one of the only blemishes on an otherwise dominant performance. Boston’s comments were delivered with a smile, but the message was unmistakable. Clark can continue playing with passion without responding to every opponent, especially when the Fever have already settled the argument on the scoreboard.

With the eighth technical carrying an automatic suspension, Clark’s next heated exchange could cost Indiana far more than a free throw.
